Yorba Linda Veterans Memorial
Yorba Linda Veterans Memorial
A Nation’s Freedom is Enjoyed By All, But Paid For By Few.
Started by a promise from one woman, Sue Fenwick, a design contest that a 16-year-old Esperanza High School Sophomore named Brian Davidson won, and built by a Gold Star father, Gary Bratain, a member of the Sons of the American Legion whose son was a resident of Yorba Linda who lost his life in Iraq. Yorba Linda Veterans Memorial came to life.
The Yorba Linda Veterans Memorial is the first veterans memorial to establish a Gold Star Walkway in Orange County and the City of Yorba Linda, California. It honors those veterans who gave their lives from 9 to 11.
Always Remember Those Who Gave Their Lives For Our Freedom
Now, all three original bronze plaques honoring Yorba Linda service members killed in action during WWII, Korea, and Vietnam have been decommissioned from their original home in front of the fire station and re-dedicated in a new place of honor on a prominent wall within the Memorial.
Yorba Linda Veterans Memorial Association has added a brick to the Gold Star Walkway to honor those additional servicemen and women killed in action since the Memorial was dedicated. Sadly, the list of names has grown to 78 heroes, including 8 from Yorba Linda.
Other walkways have been created to honor all war veterans and/or those who have served our great country.
Veterans Day – Monday, November 11, at 2 PM
The Yorba Linda Veterans Memorial Association is pleased to announce that we will be holding our traditional Veterans Day Ceremony on Monday, November 11, at 2 PM. Our keynote speaker will be US Marine Corps Veteran Adam Sikes. Sikes is also a published author and paramilitary operations officer who served in Central Asia, the Middle East, East Africa, and Europe. In addition, Tara Campbell, Mayor of Yorba Linda, has been invited to speak.
The Esperanza HS Army Junior ROTC will present the Colors, pipers from the Los Angeles Police Emerald Society Pipes and Drums will be present, and we will conduct the traditional Gold Star Roll Call followed by the playing of Taps.
The event is open to the public, and we will have a large tent set up to provide shade for many ceremony attendees. We also encourage bringing your lawn chairs.
Honoring Hometown Heroes – Sunday, December 8, at 1 PM
The Yorba Linda Veterans Memorial Association is pleased to announce that we will host the Honoring Hometown Heroes ceremony on Sunday, December 8, at 1 PM. This year the ceremony will be held at the Yorba Linda Community Center, located at 4501 Casa Loma Avenue, Yorba Linda, CA 92886.
The Honoring Hometown Heroes ceremony began in 2010 to honor the brave service members who sacrificed while protecting our essential freedoms and great country. At the ceremony, Gold Star families are invited to place a personalized ornament of the Honoring Hometown Heroes Christmas Tree. After the ceremony, the families are given their hero’s ornament as a keepsake.
The 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit from Camp Pendleton will present the Colors, and the Band of the California Battalion, Southern California’s premiere Civil War reenactment band, will provide music. The event is open to the public, and all are encouraged to attend.
